The Gold Hunters A FirstHand Picture of Life in California Mining Camps in the Early Fifties Classic Reprint J D Borthwick 9781331541370 Books Reviews

Good eye witness review of the California Gold Rush and the beginning expansion of a new state in the USA. As it is written during this time, some of the phrases and language take time to sort out.it is very good about geographical description and personal attires.
The author was there and he brings the gold fields alive. I can’t imagine how difficult it was to get to CA from the East Coast by crossing the Isthumus of Panama, but the did it in search of riches.
I love nonfiction, especially history both foreign and American. If you are the same you will like this book. It's definitely not 'light reading' but it makes you think and I like that.
An absolutely stirring, first hand account of the early years of the California gold rush. The author made the difficult trip to San Francisco in 1851 and clearly describes his adventures as a young miner through 1852. A good accounting of life in the Sierra Nevada gold fields and is well worth the time to read.
The narrator joins the rush to San Francisco by way of Panama in 1851, as humanity floods into California from every nation. His intelligent reporting makes for good reading, as he joins the miners and prospectors in the tent cities of Gold Country. I have been in many of the towns mentioned, so it is nice to see their descriptions as miners outposts in the early days. An excellent firsthand journal by a smart explorer, capturing the spirit of the Gold Rush.
So much history here, observed from so many angles ... From San Francisco to the Northern gold regions to the southern regions, including wonderful descriptions of the topography and weather. I could really visualize the terrain and the challenges experienced by these daring adventurers. It was also interesting to note the difference between the immigrant styles and cultures, all explained in a positive and constructive manner. As you read the book, you could sense the growth and maturity of both the settlers and regions, from boom towns to established societies. Very well written with descriptive vocabulary and vivid word pictures. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book. I'll be moving to this area soon and can't wait to drive the Gold Hwy 49 from North to South. It will be interesting to compare the regions as they are described in this book to how they are now.
One of my paternal ancestors left his family and went to the Gold Fields of Sacramento. He subsequently removed to Aurora, then CA, now NV, and was shot and killed causing Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) to write to his brother Orion Clemens that they would not fight the claim jumpers because they didn't want to turn out like "poor old Gebhart" (my ancestor). I wanted to understand the lives of those early miners, and this book delivered that.
